There I stood at my front door. Uneasy about a decision I was about to make. It involved my little girl, and I couldn’t shake these red flags I was having. Why didn’t this settle right with me? I couldn’t shake it. I explained all my reservations to Chuck, and without question, he said, “If you don’t feel right about it, don’t do it.”
Growing up, my parents used to tell us girls, “When there is a question inside your heart about something or someone – never ignore it. That is the Holy Spirit giving you pause.”

The following day, I ignored the warnings and decided to proceed with my original decision. After all, I was between a rock and a hard place and had no choice.
Making the bed, I heard the Lord’s loud and clear voice, “It’s better to keep it out than try and get it out later.” At that moment, I knew I could not agree to something the Lord warned me against. I felt so much peace when I decided not to follow through with the plans.
The Bible says, “For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace…” Isaiah 55:12: If peace doesn’t follow your decision, I would check up.
I was about to open a can of worms that I would have had to deal with longer than I would have liked, and then there would have been the awkward dismissal from my home of something (or someone) that should not have been there to begin with. The Lord spared me through the Holy Spirit, who is ever present in our lives if we listen to his guidance.
Don’t think the devil doesn’t want to use avenues to get inside your haven. He would love nothing better than to wreak havoc in your dwelling. He would love to steal your peace, destroy your marriage, and rob your finances. He does it craftily, like the movies we watch, books we read, jokes we tell, music, and other entertainment or the people we associate with. It’s like hooking your house pipe’s fresh water supply up to the sewer line and thinking it won’t reach the kitchen sink. Trust me, it will.

Not long after I slammed the door on the only decision I thought I could make, the Lord opened a window. Another solution came, and I had continued peace where my little girl was concerned. God will always make a way when we follow His leading. I didn’t see it immediately, but He was right on time when I needed him.
In the book of Nehemiah, the city’s walls are destroyed. Nehemiah comes back to rebuild them. Without walls there is no protection against intruders. Nehemiah knew this and tells the people to stand guard. He posted men at the gates and at other strategic locations. Then, he puts others in front of their own houses (Nehemiah 7).
Without Nehemiah’s instruction, Jerusalem would not have prevailed. They would have fallen prey to the first enemy that approached. We must heed Biblical teaching and guard what we allow to enter our homes. When we do, we will win – on every front.
