Nobody is going to say, “I had such a nice time at Debbie’s. Her baseboards were so clean.”

Some days feel more like chaos as I am cleaning goldfish and some sort of gooey substance off the back seats of our SUV. And yet, setting boundaries, schedules, and rules provides a bank for the river to run swiftly.
The Queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem to see if the rumors of Solomon’s splendor were true. She desired to ask him hard questions and know his secret for such organization and structure; even Solomon’s servants were well cared for. Wisdom was his secret.
“And when the Queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit in her.” 1 Kings 10:4-5
I ask the Lord daily to show me the best way to juggle all the tasks and little ones He has entrusted into my care. I need to know how to make the playroom passable, put groceries away, and clean my windows from tiny hand prints and dog drool, not to mention the list of outdoor projects that need tending to.
It never fails that keeping a pen and schedule handy makes it simple for me to see the plan. I need a plan because keeping house can be messy, like spinning my wheels with no results. It is the same song and dance daily. However, sometimes the mess is a precursor to your miracle. You can’t see its effects in the moment. But day after day, when you look back and see a trail of cleanliness, you know a miracle happened.
There are the daily chores, and then there are the weekly chores. I have learned not to put the weekly chores all on the same day but to spread them out over the week. It is easier for me to see the victory that way. God doesn’t just want to show up for major decisions, but He wants to be present when you’re trying to decide the best way to position your spring Daisys, too.
The test strengthens your faith in Him. The victory solidifies your story with him.

I have some incredible older women that speak into my life. If you do not have this kind of council, I encourage you to find some. Everyone needs some “Titus 2” women in their lives (Titus 2:3-5). It is impossible to navigate motherhood successfully without them. I have many women in different seasons of life who encourage me and give me sound wisdom on other decisions and ideas to help me better manage certain areas. One of these ladies told me recently, “I wish I had noticed the important things more and didn’t get so caught up in the trivial.”
Chuck had to be away for one of Eva’s basketball games. I was in charge of getting all of us to the game- on time. We pulled up in a torrential downpour. I sat briefly, thinking how to keep Eva dry, hold on to Charlotte, and tote Tyson in his car seat, not to mention all the bags that come with children and activities. I reviewed the logistics with Eva when a lady came into view through the rain. She was carrying an umbrella and jumping over puddles to get to me. I cracked my door and heard her say, “I came to lend you a hand!” Relief flooded my face as I watched her grab babies and bags, thinking nothing of herself or the rain.
Later that same day, we were all snug back inside our home. I could hear The Sound of Music playing from the living room. Tyson and Charlotte were fast asleep. I decided I wanted to avoid looking back and remembering how clean my kitchen was. A steady rain outside made a perfect setting to curl up next to Eva and enjoy raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.
I don’t think the Queen of Sheba will be stopping by to ask for my homemaking secrets or to study my baseboards, but there may be a young mother who needs help through the rain, or perhaps she will need a bit of wisdom from my bag of experience. May I be the blessing she needs and leave her better than I find her.
Happy are your men, and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God, who delighted in you…” 1Kings 10:8-9
